To make the sauce: melt the coconut oil in a saucepan over medium heat, then add the garlic and onion.
¼ cup minced onion, 2 tbsp. coconut oil, 1 garlic clove
Cook until soft and fragrant; add all the remaining ingredients, season to taste with additional pepper and sea salt, stirring everything together.
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, 4 oz. tomato sauce, ½ cup homemade ketchup, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice, 2 tbsp. chili powder, ½ tsp. cumin, 2 tbsp. raw honey, ⅛ cup freshly ground black pepper + more to taste
Bring to a soft boil, lower heat, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until sauce thickens.
Let the sauce cool down while preparing the beef skewers.
Thread the beef, bell pepper, and onion alternately on the skewers.
1 to 2 lbs. sirloin steak, 2 bell peppers, 1 onion, Wood or metal skewers
Brush generously with the sauce and marinate in the refrigerator for 2 to 8 hours (optional). If you want to save some sauce to serve, divide it in half so it isn't in contact with the raw steak.
Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
Grill the skewers for 2 to 3 minutes per side or to desired doneness.
Let cool for 2 to 3 minutes, adjust seasoning to taste, and serve with extra barbecue sauce.
