You can, of course, search for a jar of Paleo-approved chili sauce at the store, though check those ingredients carefully, for they may be hiding some elements you would normally avoid, such as high fructose corn syrup or refined sugar.

Recipes abound for chili sauce, and there are so many variations that it is easy to get overwhelmed. Just focus on the basic ingredients and tweak them to discover what you and your family like best.

A Paleo version of chili sauce goes like this: dice 1/4 cup of onion and cook for 3 minutes over medium heat in the fat of your choice, then add a minced clove of garlic and cook one minute longer.

Next, stir into the pot: 6 oz. can of tomato paste, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp. coconut aminos, 1 tsp. chili powder, 1/4 tsp. allspice, season with salt and pepper, finally adding 1/2 cup water – let it simmer for 30 minutes until it is the consistency of ketchup.

Make a larger batch of chili sauce and keep it in the fridge for later in the week, or store it in the freezer for the next time it is needed. It makes the perfect dip for crispy coconut shrimp!
